How to Rewrite Matric Subjects in South Africa: Second Chance Matric Programme, Requirements and Registration

How to Rewrite your Matric Subjects in South Africa

If you did not get the matric results you were hoping for there may still be other options available. You may be able to rewrite your matric subjects to improve your results, complete your outstanding subjects or meet requirements for further studies.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) offer the Second Chance Matric Support Programme to help suitable candidates improve their results and achieve a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC).

Learning support will be provided via study materials, online resources, face to face lessons and educational programming.

This guide outlines how the programme works, who will be eligible, the documents you’ll need and where to get help to register.

1. What is the Second Chance Matric Programme?

The Second Chance Matric Support Programme is a programme by the Department of Basic Education to help candidates who have not yet met matric requirements or want to improve their results.

It provides learning support to help eligible candidates prepare for their exams.

Support may include:

Face to face lessons at designated learning centres.

Study guides.

Online resources.

Television and Radio lessons.

Past exam papers.

Subject specific support.

Note: This does not automatically register you for an exam. You’ll still need to register for your exam separately.

 2. Who can apply for a Matric Rewrite?

The programme can help candidates from different categories including:

National Senior Certificate (NSC): Candidates who have sat their NSC exams in the past and want to improve their results.

Senior Certificate (SC): Adults who want to complete or improve their Senior Certificate.

Eligible candidates who could not sit exams: Candidates who could not sit their exams due to acceptable reasons may be able to sit in another exam session. You will need to provide supporting evidence.

Whether you are eligible will depend on your exam history, qualification and exam session regulations. Find out which category you fall into by contacting your Provincial Education Department.

 3. Which subjects will you receive support for?

The Second Chance Programme provides resources for the following Grade 12 subjects:

Accounting.

Agricultural Sciences.

Business Studies.

Economics.

English First Additional Language.

Geography.

History.

Mathematics.

Mathematical Literacy.

Physical Sciences.

Life Sciences.

Check the official information to find out which subjects/resources will be available for your exam cycle.

 4. What documents will you need?

Depending on which category you fall into you’ll need to prepare the following:

Completed examination registration form.

Certified copy of your South African ID or an acceptable passport.

Previous matric Statement of Results.

Previous highest school qualification (if applicable).

Supporting evidence if you couldn’t sit the exam for acceptable reasons.

Depending on whether you’re sitting the NSC or SC you may need additional documents.

Do not assume you will need the same documents. Check with your exam office to find out what you’ll need.

5. How to register for a Matric Rewrite

Depending on which qualification you want to complete you’ll need to follow the following steps:

Step 1: Determine your exam category.

Find out if you’re an NSC or SC candidate. Depending on your previous exam history and age you may have different options available.

Step 2: Contact your Provincial Education Department.

Find out when the exam will be held, when you can register, what the requirements are and what exam centres will be available.

Step 3: Gather your documents.

Make sure you have your ID, previous results and any other supporting evidence.

Step 4: Fill in the correct registration form.

Contact your provincial department/exam centre for instructions on how to fill in your form. Some candidates will be able to register online whilst others will need to register in person.

Step 5: Submit your application.

Submit your completed form along with your evidence before the cut off date.

Step 6: Confirm your registration.

Get confirmation that you have been registered for your exam. Take note of any reference numbers or evidence of your registration.

The DBE provide specific information on registering online for Senior Certificate candidates. NSC candidates should contact their provincial exam office to confirm how they can register.

 6. Is the Second Chance Matric Programme free?

The Second Chance learning support provided by the Department of Basic Education is free. This includes educational resources and lessons from the programme.

Be wary of individuals/organisations asking for payment to be part of the official programme.

Contact the relevant education department to find out what the requirements are for registering for your exam. Do not confuse private tuition with the official DBE programme.

 7. Where can I find study resources?

You do not need to revise without support.

The DBE provide resources to help you revise including past exam papers, revision booklets and subject resources.
